Thoughtful psychiatry.
Whole-person care.
A partner for your progress.
Welcome to MI Healthy Mind – a psychiatry practice proudly serving Southeast Michigan. Staying local, my goal is to be accessible and supportive to our community, helping you prioritize your mental health with care that fits your life, be it in person or through telehealth.
At MI Healthy Mind, I provide comprehensive and compassionate psychiatric care for adults of all ages. My approach is rooted in taking the time to truly understand each person’s story, strengths, and challenges. I integrate evidence-based treatment with lifestyle supports – such as exercise, nutrition, and mind/body practices to help patients build stability and long-term well-being.
As a first-generation American, I bring cultural awareness and sensitivity to my work, honoring the diverse identities and experiences that shape each person’s path to healing. I aim to be both a clinician and an accountability partner, offering guidance, encouragement, and clarity at every step of the journey toward a healthier mind and life.

About
Dr. Marianna Shimonova

Early on, I was drawn to questions about what shapes us as human beings. My curiosity has centered on the interplay between nature and nurture, resilience and vulnerability, and the ways in which we confront challenges, process trauma, and seek meaning in our lives. This interest led me to study neurobiology at Scripps College in California, and then University of Washington in Seattle, where I also studied philosophy and psychology. During that time, I was actively involved in research on aging and Alzheimer’s disease and had the privilege of publishing in these areas. I also received a scholarship from the American Heart Association, which allowed me to spend a semester at Stanford University exploring how different systems of the body function and interact.
I went on to earn my Medical Degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed my residency in Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Alongside the core training, I pursued additional specialization in OCD and completed a psychodynamic fellowship at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute.
Following residency, I served at the Bronx and Seattle Veterans Hospitals in Acute Care Psychiatry, where I also enjoyed teaching residents and medical students—a role that deepened my appreciation for both education and mentorship. Later, I transitioned to integrated outpatient psychiatry at Veterans hospitals in Oregon and Ann Arbor, gaining extensive experience with collaborative care models.
I believe in a well-rounded approach to mental health that often integrates psychotherapy, nutritional support, and physical activity alongside psychiatric treatment. After seven years of working as a telepsychiatrist, I am excited to return to in-person practice and provide holistic, face-to-face care.
It is a privilege to be part of your journey, and I look forward to working together in building a path toward healing and growth.

Diagnosis
Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation: a thorough assessment of an individual's mental, emotional, behavioral, and physical health to identify potential diagnoses and develop an individualized treatment plan. It involves a diagnostic interview, review of medical and family history, and may include laboratory tests, neuropsychological tests, and collaboration with other healthcare providers and family members.
The goal is to gather a complete picture of the individual's functioning to provide effective, personalized care. This also includes second opinions about previously established diagnoses and treatments.

Motivational interview: collaborative counseling technique that helps people resolve ambivalence and find their own intrinsic motivation to change their behavior.
